Biogas is produced by the anaerobic decomposition of organic matter. The organic wastes used include animal dung, human sewage, agricultural residues, municipal solid waste or any other biodegradable waste.
Swamps, marshes or landfills can be used to produces biogas. On a large scale, biogas can be produced using a biogas plant. Biogas plant is the anaerobic digester that treats the biodegradable wastes to release biogas.
