Expert Answer

The Harappan civilisation was discovered accidently. In 1856, two British engineers stumbled upon the remains of an ancient site when they were laying down railway lines.

In 1921, an archaeologist discovered the ruins of Harappa on the banks of river Ravi in the Montgomery district of Punjab (Pakistan).

In 1922-23, R. D. Banerjee, an officer of the Archaeological Survey of India, stumbled upon the remains of an ancient city in Mohenjodaro, on the river Indus in the Larkana district of Sindh (Pakistan).
