How twinkling of star occurs ?

Starlight passes through layers of atmosphere before reaching us.
 
The gases in the layers are non-uniform. Also there is constant movement of air.
 
This causes some of the light to pass normally and some refract through particles of air and reach us after bending.
 
Hence, it seems the stars are twinkling.
