- There are a total of 3 outermost shell electrons of neutral boron atom + 3 electrons from 3 chlorine atoms = 6 electrons in the valence shell of Boron.
- This does not satisfy the octet rule.
- Boron is therefore electron-deficient.
- Hence it is able to accept a lone pair of electrons in order to attain a full octet. Therefore, BCl3 is a lewis acid.
