CBSE Class 10 Answered

How the refraction of light depends on wavelength of the light used?
Asked by | 29 Nov, 2012, 09:55: PM
answered-by-expert Expert Answer
The speed of light of all colours or wavelengths is same in air or vacuum, but in any other transparent medium, the speed of light is different for different colours. In a medium, red light travels faster than the violet light, therefore the refractive index of a medium is more for violet light and less for red light. Thus refractive index increases with the decrease in wavelength and the light rays bend more.
