CBSE Class 10 Answered
How the high refractive index of diamond is responsible for its partial shining?
Asked by jgprmr | 16 Jun, 2017, 07:29: PM
Expert Answer
1) Refractive index of a medium gives the idea about how much light that particular medium is able to refract/bend.
2) The high refractive index of diamond suggests that light bends more when passed through it.
3) Also for a particular incidence angle there are higher chances that the light will totally internally reflect inside the diamond.
4) So, it is this total internal reflection that takes place inside the diamond which gives its shining nature.
5) When light is internally reflected at each point that light gives out a shining effect. This is why diamonds shine.
