how the four minutes of the day increase due to total internal reflection

The length of the day increases by 4 minutes daily due to atmospheric refraction and not due to total internal reflection.
When the sun is rising from below the horizon, the light appears to come to us as it gets refracted from the atmosphere. Same thing happens when the sun is setting near the horizon. Hence the sunrise happens 2 minutes before actual sunrise and sunset happens 2 minutes after the actual sunset, thereby lengthening the day by 4 minutes.
