How lungs are designed in humans to maximise the area for exchange of gases.

Within the lungs, there are present a large number of small balloon like structures called alveoli. The 2 lungs together have about 300-500 million alveoli. These alveoli provide an extensive area for exchange of gases. In this way lungs are designed to maximise the area for exchange of gases.
