How is digestion related to respiration?

Expert Answer
In digestion, the various complex substances present in food are converted to simple substances. These digested nutrients are absorbed by the blood vessels and taken to different cells of the body.
When oxygen is taken in through respiration, the oxygen is carried to all the cells of the body through blood. This oxygen acts on the digested food materials present in cells and energy is released in the form of ATP. This energy can be used to carry out the various life processes.
