how does magnetic field determine both relative strength and direction of the field

The tangent to any point of a magnetic lines of force gives the direction of the magnetic field.
Relative strength of magnetic can be known by seeing how closely the magnetic lines of force are placed. Closer the magnetic lines of force, stronger is the field.
