How does Galileo's experiment proves the 1st law of motion?

Galileo argued that noo force is needed to keep the things in motion, as what it was supposed in earlier times.
He set up an experiment having two inclined planes facing each other and rolled a ball over one of them. So if the planes and the ball are smooth enough, then they will reach the same height with which they were released. Because when they dont have any force opposing motion (frictionless surface) they will maintain their velocity and reach the same height on the other inclined plane.
