ICSE Class 10 Answered
Explanation: The mobile ions are used for carrying charge through the solution. To transfer electricity through solution there is a need to move electrons through the phase boundary and then transport charge through the solution. Thus, an electrolytic solution conducts electricity because of movement of ions in the solution. The larger the concentration of ions, the better the solution conducts electricity.
Example: Electrolysis of copper sulphate solution:
The electrolysis of an aqueous solution of copper sulphate using copper electrodes results in transfer of copper metal from the anode to the cathode during electrolysis. The copper sulphate is ionised in aqueous solution forming Cu2+ and SO42-
CuSO4 ? Cu2+ + SO42-
The positively charged copper ions migrate to the cathode, where each gains two electrons to become copper atoms that are deposited on the cathode. Cu2+ + 2e- Cu
