CBSE Class 12-science Answered

How does a polar dielectric develop a net dipole moment in an external field?
Asked by Topperlearning User | 23 Apr, 2015, 11:32: AM
answered-by-expert Expert Answer

Molecules of polar dielectric have permanent dipole moment. In the absence of electric field, these dipoles align randomly due thermal agitation. So, the total dipole moment is zero. On applying electric field, these randomly aligned dipoles try to align in the direction of electric field. As a result there is net dipole moment in the direction of electric field.
