How do we know the presence of atoms if they do not exist independently for most of the elements?

As we all know whatever is present in us or around us are different forms of matter. We needed to discovere what could be the constituents of matter. After so many discoveries, it was proved that atom is the smallest individual particle which are fundamentals of any matter.
