Expert Answer
Dear Student,
A chemical reaction in which a single compound splits into two or more simpler substances is called a decomposition reaction.
Exanple: Electrolytic decomposition of water gives hydrogen and oxygen gas.
2H2O → 2H2 + O2
Products of decomposition reactions may be predicted as follows:
1. Generally metal hydroxides decompose to from corresponding metal oxide and water.
For example:
2Fe(OH)2 → Fe2O3 + 3H2O
2. Generally metal oxides decompose to form corresponding elemental metal and oxygen gas.
For example:
2AL2O3 → 4Al + 3O2↑
3. Generaaly metal carbonates decompose to form corresponding metal oxides and carbon dioxide.
For example:
BeCO3 → BeO + CO2↑
4. Generally metal nitrates decompose to form corresponding metal nitrites and oxygen gas.
For example:
2Al(NO3)3 → 2Al(NO2)3 + 3O2↑
In this manner, by understanding the nature of reactant and the rules of chemical reactions, we can predict the products of decomposition reactions.
