How different was the First World War from the earlier wars?

The First World War was different from the earlier wars in terms of scale and repercussions. It was fought on a worldwide scale and affected almost all the countries of the world. New methods of defence and destruction were used during it and the civilian population was affected by it on a large scale. This war was unlike any other war in the history of mankind.
