Expert Answer
The British tried every trick to win back the loyalty of the Indians. It was announced that loyal landholders would be rewarded and they would continue to enjoy traditional rights over their lands. Those who had rebelled against the Company were assured that if they surrendered and if they had not been involved in killing of the British, then they would be spared and their land titles would not be touched. Nevertheless, scores of sepoys, rebels, nawabs and rajas were tried and hanged.
