CBSE Class 10 Answered
How can we identify compounds (salts or gases) based on their change in colour or smell?

In chemistry, Various compounds are separated on the basis of their different characteristics like-colour, smell and chemical reactions.
Ther is not a single method by which all the salts can be idetntified. We study all these procedures in the branch of chemistry which is known as 'analytical chemistry' and these various methods are called as 'qualitative analysis'.
We can identify various salts by these various procedures-
(1) Appearance of compound- For example, Cr+3 is violet, Cu+2 is blue.
(2) Heating effect
(3) Flame test
(4) Solubility in water
(5) Reaction with nitric acid
(6) Reaction with sodium hydroxide.
(7) Reaction with ammonia.
(8) Reaction with sodium chlolride.
(9) Reaction with silver nitrate.
