Sodium acetate is heated with soda lime:
Dry sodium acetate on heating with dry soda lime (NaOH + CaO), gives methane. Sodium carbonate is formed a s a byproduct.
CH3 COONa + NaO H + CaO → CH4 + Na2CO3
