To distinguish between an unpolarised light and a plane polarized light using a polaroid, place a polaroid in the path of the given light. The polaroid is rotated about the direction of propagation of light. If the light intensity changes from maximum to zero minimum twice in one rotation then the incident light is plane polarised. If the light transmitted by the polaroid shows no variation in intensity on rotating the polaroid, the incident light is unpolarised light.
