How can applying pressure and reducing temperature liquify gases?

Intermolecular spaces in gases is more as compared to the liquids.If the intermolecular spaces between the gas molecules is decreased then gases can be liquified.On reducing the temperature kinetic energy of the particles decreases and these particles start moving slowly.On applying pressure gas molecules are brought together thus changing them to liquid state.
