The components of a vector is on the Cartesian coordinate axes.

Vector OA has two components in the plane: OB along x axis and OC along y axis are components of OA. Bold letters are vectors. |OB| means magnitude of OB. i and j are unit vectors in the direction of x and y respectively.

OA = i|OB| + j|OC|

Or if OA = r, |OB| = x, |OC| = y

=>r = i x + jy
