We are able to listen to radio because of superposition of the waves in which low frequency waves are superimposed on a high frequency waves this process is called modulation .

This is done because these high frequency carrier waves travel through space or medium with the speed of light and theyare not obstructed by earth's atmosphere. the reverse of first phenomenon is called demodulaton in which retrival of the information from the modulated wave is done at the receiver.
