How are powerful countries like USA promoting democracy in the world?

Powerful countries like US have taken up the task of promoting democracy in the rest of the world. They have been propogating the value of democracy and have been intervening in the non- democratic countries to convert them into a democratic country. In some of these types of countries they also have launched an armed attack.
For example, Americans invaded Iraq and removed Saddam hussein from power in 2003. They instilled an intermn government of its preference. UN disregarded this war and considered it unauthorised and illegal. They asked US to prove their action. The US claimed that they were forced to take this step because Iraq possessed secret nuclear weapon and other weapons of mass destruction that posed a big threat to the whole world.
