This means that it is reflected back along the same path.

Say you hit a ball straight at a wall then it comes back to you along the same straight line. Its just that it now moves in the reverse direction.

Similarly when light is incident normally, on a reflecting surface, it just reverses direction and goes back. So we say that it retraces the path, or in simpler words, it goes back along the same path although in a reverse direction.
