Dear student,
In a large population, the effect of genetic drift is not very sgnificant. However, in a small, isolated population genetic drift may have a significant effect on the makeup of the population. It can result in genetic traits being lost from a population or becoming widespread in a population without respect to the survival or reproductive value of the gene pairs (alleles) involved. Along with natural selection, genetic drift is a principal force in evolution and speciation. If the number of individuals of a species becomes small, it becomes increasingly influenced by genetic drift, which may result in the loss of valuable genetic diversity
