Deuterium, (D, or 2H), also called heavy hydrogen, isotope of hydrogen with a nucleus consisting of one proton and one neutron, which is double the mass of the nucleus of ordinary hydrogen (one proton).
Heavy water (D2O) is used as a reaction moderator in nuclear reactors. It slows down the reaction which makes the reactants and products available for a long time which is useful in studying the reaction mechanism of a certain reaction in the nuclear reactor.
