Expert Answer
Our muscles require a large amount of energy. Although the muscles obtain some energy by carrying out anaerobic respiration, majority of the energy needs are fulfilled by aerobic respiration, which cannot be carried out in the absence of oxygen. Since our bloodstream is responsible for transporting oxygen to the muscles, the heart needs to pump a greater amount of blood for maintaining the oxygen supply to the muscles that are working. To fulfill this goal, the heart starts beating rapidly and forcefully, which increases the heartbeat.
