glottis and eppiglotis

Expert Answer:

Glottis is covered by a lid like flap of cartilage called epiglottis. It is normally open i.e. pointed upwards, but during swallowing it closes over the glottis, horizontally. Thus it prevents food from going into the trachea and instead directs it to the oesophagus.
