we assume lens to be used is convex lens so that focal length is +ve by sign convention

lens formula is : - 1/f = 1/v - 1/u

where f is focal length, v is lens to image distance, u is lens to object distsance. By sign convention u, i.e., object distance is negative.

hence 1/12 = 1/v + 1/8     or 1/v = 1/12 - 1/8 , we get v = -24 cm ,

By sign convention if the image distance is negative, then both object and image are left side , i.e, image is magnified, erect and virtual
