(1) Given a line segment whose length is not known.
(2) Fix the compasses pointer on C and the pencil end on D. The opening of the instrument now gives the length of .
(3) Draw any line l. Choose a point A on l. Without changing the compasses setting, place the point on A.
(4) Swing an arc that cuts l at a point, say P. Now is a copy of .
(5) Again taking compasses pointer at P, without changing the compasses setting, swing an arc that cuts l at a point B.
(6) Now is the required line which is double of .
