When player catches the wall the ball comes to an halt and it's momentum decreases to 0 in very short time.So the force applied on the ball is very large(Force[Change of momentum /time).By newton's third law this force is experienced by the player.Such an large amount of force can cause injury to the player. So the fielder gradually pulls his hand backward so that the velocity decreases to 0 in a larger time so the force experienced by hand is less.
