Expert Answer
Acids can be broadly classified as organic and inorganic acids.
1) Organic acids are the acids containing carboxylic group (-COOH)
Example: Acetic acid CH3COOH
Phenolic (aromatic hydroxy) and alcoholic compounds, for example ethanol (CH3CH2OH) are weakly acidic in nature.
2)Inorganic acid
Example HCl, H2SO4
According to Lewis theory, an acid is electron pair acceptor.
Hence,
a) all cations are lewis acids. Example: Cu2+
b) molecules where the central atom can have more than 8 electrons can also nehave as Lewis acid. Example: SiF4
c) molecules tat have multiple bonds between two atoms of different electronegativities. Example: CO2
Depending upon its strength, the acids can also be classified as weak acid and strong acid.
Example: H2SO4 is a strong acid while acetic acid is a weak acid.
