Expert Answer:

Acidic and Basic nature of different edible substances:

Consider some edible substances such as lemon juice, tamarind, common salt, vinegar, sugar, baking soda, Honey, Alum (Fitkari), grapes raw mangoes and Jaggery.

Let us taste these substances and sort them as per their taste.

Some are sweet, some are salty. Some are sour and some are bitter.

Lemon juice

Baking soda

Common salt

Alum (Fitkari)

Tamarind (imli)

Raw mango

Lemon juice,Vinegar, Tamarind (imli), Amla and Raw mango taste sour. This is because these substances are acidic in nature. The acids present in these type of substances are called as natural acids.

Baking soda, Alum (Fitkari) are bitter to taste. This is because these substances are basic in nature.

Sugar has a sweet taste while common salt is salty to taste this is because they are neutral substances. Some substances are neither acidic nor basic hence they are neutral and are called  as salts.
