answered-by-expert Expert Answer
Whenever any metal chloride is heated, decomposition reaction takes place to produce metal chloride and oxygen.
Similarly, when potassium chlorate is heatedin the presence of catalyst typically MnO2, potassium chloride and oxygen are formed.
2KClO3 → 2KCl + 3O2
When potassium chlorate is heated in the absence of catalyst, first it forms potassium perclorate as follows:
4KClO3 → 3KClO4 + KCl
Further heating, converts perclorate into potassium chloride.
KClO4 → KCl + 2O2
