The density of air in atmosphere changes due to various reasons like altitute, tropical climate etc. Hence layers of air act as thermal gradients causing phenomenon like mirage etc. Some scientists even believe that refraction caused by these layers of air with varying densities is so strong that one can see wavering images upto kilometers. A few others tell that the so called 'UFOs' can also be a result of atmospheric refraction.
