  • Mammary glands or milk glands are modified sweat glands.
  • Mammary glands are present in both, males and females. However, these glands remain in undeveloped form in males. Mammary glands are developed in females to form a pair of breasts.
  • Each mammary gland consists of a central projection called nipple. There are about 15-20 milk ducts, which open into the nipple. 
  • Each milk duct is branched inwards into 15-20 lobes, which consist of grape-like structure of milk-secreting cells called alveoli.
  • The activity of mammary gland is related to reproductive hormones, prolactin, oestrogen and progesterone, which are prominently secreted during pregnancy.
  • The milk secreted by mammary gland is highly nutritious for the new-born baby.
