The shuttle astronauts carry some of the water needed for themselves and also deliver water to the International Space Station. Over a year 2200 liters are transported at a cost of $US11000 per liter. The ISS also has a Russian built device that processes the humidity in the air and condenses it for drinking and other purposes. On the shuttle, water is produced as a byproduct of the orbiter's fuel cells converting hydrogen and oxygen to electricity.

Because of the massive cost of transporting water, NASA is working on a system that converts many of the astronauts' body fluids - and, yes, that includes urine - into drinkable water.
