For whom and by whom was the name Bharata used?

The name 'Bharata' was used for a community of people who lived in the north-west part of what is now called India. These people were mentioned in the Rigveda, the earliest composition in Sanskrit written around 3500 years ago. Later on, the name 'Bharata' came to stand for the country.
