FIND THE EQUATION OF ELLIPSE,WITH MAJOR AXIS ALONG THE X-AXIS&PASSING THROUGH THE POINTS(4,3)&(-1,4)

Expert Answer
The required equation of the ellipse will of the form x2/a2 + y2/b2 = 1
It passes through the points (4, 3) and (-1, 4).
So, we get,
16/a2 + 9/b2 = 1 and 1/a2 + 16/b2 = 1
16p + 9q = 1 and p + 16q = 1  where 1/a2 = p and 1/b2 = q
Solve the two equations to get 1/a2 = p = 7/247 and 1/b2 = q = 15/247
 
Thus, the equation of the ellipse will be 7x2 + 15y2 = 247.

Let  P  be any point of intersection. If the major axis of the ellipse is  15  and the area of the triangle PF1F2  = 26 , then find the value of 4a^2  - 4b^2 .
