explain Wurtz reaction

When an alkyl halide is treated with metallic sodium in dry ethereal solution, a symmetrical alkane containing twice the number of carbon atoms present in alkyl group is obtained.
RX + 2Na +XR→ R-R +2NaX
This recation is Wurtz reaction.
