Binding energy is the mechanical energy required to disassemble a whole into separate parts.

This implies that after the binding energy has been supplied net energy of the system becomes 0. Let us denote the total energy of system before binding energy is provided by E. So we have:

B.E. + E=0

B.E.=-E
