explain the formation of state in india after independence

At the time of independence in 1947, India consisted of 565 disjointed princely states that were merged together to form 27 states. The grouping of states at the time was done on the basis of political and historical considerations rather than on linguistic or cultural divisions, but this was a temporary arrangement.
- Erstwhile the Madras Presidency, was reorganized as a state in 1950 and renamed Tamil Nadu in 1969.
- Andhra Pradesh was given statehood on 1 November 1956. Before becoing a separate state it was the part of state of Madras.
- Maharashtra and Gujarat was the Part of the state of Bombay Province. On 1 May 1960, the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat were formed as independent states.
- Nagaland was formed on 1 December 1963. It was separated from Assam.
- Punjab was created after the merger of Patiala princely state with eight other similar states.In 1966, Haryana was sparated as an independent state.
