Potassium reacts with oxygen in air to produce potassium oxide. K2O is a basic oxide.
4K + O2 ——> 2K2O
from air potassium oxide
Potassium oxide reacts with water to form an alkali called potassium hydroxide, KOH.
K2O + H2O ——> 2KOH
