Women all over the world played a very important role in nationalist struggles. They participated in the French Revolution, the Russian Revolution and in the independent struggles of several nations such as India and Vietnam. Infact, liberty is personified as a women. Artists in the 18th and 19th centuries portrayed nations as female figures. The female form that was chosen to personify the nation did not stand for any particular woman in real life, rather it would give an abstract idea of the nation in concrete form.
