Explain that Torque is only due to transverse component of force. Radial component has nothing to do with torque.

As we know that

= r F sinΦ----------------------------------------(1)

The figure given below shows the relative orientation of  and.

 Resolve  into two rectangular components:

i) F r= F cos Φ

       = radial component of

ii) FΦ= F sin Φ
          = Transverse component of

 From e q(1)

         = r (F sinΦ)

             = r F Φ

i.e Torque of a force is given by the product of transverse component of force and perpendicular distance from the axis of rotation. The radial component has no role play in torque.
