Electrical impulses reach only those cells that are connected by nervous tissue. They travel very rapidly, enabling very quick responses to be carried out.

Chemical communication, on the other hand is slower than electical impulses, but they can reach every part of the body, irrespective of nervous connections. Here, the hormones are carried through blood, which can reach every part of the body. There is a great diversity in the hormones used in this transmission, hence variety of functions can be carried out.

Cells cannot continuoulsy create and transmit electrical impulses, so before generating and transmitting a new impulse, some time gap is needed. No such time gap is required in chemical communication. Chemical communication can be carried out steadily and persistently.
