Adrenal glands show outer cortex and inner medulla.
The cortex secretes hormones called corticosteroids and mineralocorticoids. Cortisol is a corticosteroid which helps in body's metabolism and usage of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Aldosterone is a mineralocorticoid, which controls blood pressure and the levels of salt and potassium in the body. The adrenal glands also stimulates the production of androgens such as testosterone.
The adrenal medulla secretes epinephrine and norepinephrine which helps in dealing with stress. Epinephrine also increases the heart rate, facilitates blood flow, relaxes smooth muscles, converts glycogen to glucose etc.
Hypothalamus and pituitary control the release of adrenal hormones.
