The processes of urbanisation and industrialisation affected the institution of family in a profound way. It loosened the ties of the family and led to a gradual breaking down of the institution of marriage among the working classes. Upper and middle class women, on the other hand, faced increasingly higher levels of social and interpersonal isolation. At the same time, their lives were made much easier by the practice of hiring domestic maids for cooking, cleaning and babysitting. Women of the lower classes, particularly those who worked for wages, had some control over their lives. However, many social reformers felt that women needed to be pushed back into homes in order to save and reconstruct the institution of family.
