Expert Answer
Self Help Group (SHG) is a group of about 15-20 members who pool their savings together. Following are the advantages of SHG:
- Members can take loans from the group’s savings themselves on a decided rate of interest. The rate of interest is much lower than the interest that is charged by the informal sources.
- After two years of regular savings, the SHG can also take a loan from the bank. Loan is given on the name of the group and creates tremendous opportunities for self-employment of the members.
- Due to SHG, the poor members are able to avail loan even in the absence of collateral.
- Many women as the members of SHGs have become economically independent. This has led to women empowerment at the rural levels.
